For the background to this article please see Part I At then end of part I of this saga I had created a new Firefox profile and reinstalled Forecast Fox and the Web Developer add-ons. All seemed well at first; but after Firefox had been running for a few hours I started to see spikes of 8% CPU usage even when Firefox was minimized and by the following morning the browser was again using 70% to 80% of the CPU even when inactive. So out of the possible causes for the CPU problem that seemed to rule out profile conflicts as the culprit. Yesterday afternoon I uninstalled Forecast Fox and then left the browser pretty much unattended with just a few pages surfed during the evening. This morning the CPU usage was still at 0%! So Forecast Fox looks to be a distinct candidate for the problem; but I still haven't ruled out the use of rich text editors like the one that I'm using to type this article. This is the first time I've used this editor since uninstalling Forecast Fox so all I have to do now is sit back and wait. If the CPU usage increases over time then that points to the editor, if it doesn't then Forecast Fox was the culprit. 31st December 2006, 17:29 I've been running Firefox 2.0.0.1 now for more than 24 hours without any unexpected increase in CPU usage. During this time I've been using my WYSIWYG rich text editor extensively for updating the site and so I can pretty much rule out the editor as the source of the issues. I've missed not having Forecast Fox as I've found it a very useful tool. Just to confirm that this really is the cause of the CPU usage problem I was experiencing I think I will reinstall it this evening. I then expect to see my CPU usage creep up overnight and that will conclude the matter for me. |
