Use Open OfficeOpen Office is the Open Source answer to other proprietary or closed source office suites. Providing full word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database capabilities as well as integration with other databases such as MySQL Open Office provides a fully functional suite of office software.
 
This course introduces users who are new to Open Office to the core functionality of the various components as well as taking a more in depth look at some aspects of the software. By the end of the course delegates will:
 
  •  Have practical experience using Open Office Writer (word processor). This includes (but is not limited to):
    • Composing documents.
    • Using document styles and templates
    • Formatting fonts, heading etc.
    • Column and page breaks
    • Saving documents in a variety of formats
    • Exporting documents for the web
    • Including art work into a document
    • Tables and laying out tabular data
    • References and cross references
    • Producing mail shots
  • Have practical experience using Open Office Calc (spreadsheet). This includes (but is not limited to):
    • Creating spreadsheets and work books
    • Entering data and simple formulas
    • Formatting data
    • Creating charts and graphs
    • Drawing on data in a database
    • Exporting data for the web
    • Integrating spreadsheets into other documents
  • Have practical experience using Open Office Impress (presentations). This includes (but is not limited to):
    • Creating presentations from scratch
    • Using styles and templates
    • Drawing and linking symbols and diagrams
    • Adding text areas
    • Adding presenter notes
    • Animating slides and diagrams
    • Running the slide show
    • Exporting the presentation for the web.
  • Have practical experience using Open Office Draw (diagramming). This includes (but is not limited to):
    • Draw a variety of diagram types
    • Use styles and templates to organize your diagrams
    • Group, ungroup and manipulate objects
    • Create photorealistic images
    • Use the picture gallery
    • Save your image as a Flash object
  • Have practical experience using Open Office Base (database). This includes (but is not limited to):
    • Creating tables and columns
    • Creatiing indexes
    • Entering, modifying and deleting data
    • Creating and running reports on the data
    • Creating an application with the Form Wizard
    • Sort the data
    • Filter the data
    • Query the data to produce summaries and other aggregate results.
  • Gain an understanding of the functions of the Open Office Math tool to produce mathematical formulae. This tool is typically not used much in most office environments and so is included here as a brief introduction. More in depth training in this tool is available if it is felt appropriate for the audience.
 
No prior office experience is necessary to attend this course. However delegates would benefit from some exposure to an existing office suite such as MicrosoftTM Office? . The course lasts for 5 days in total. Alternatively the course can be broken down into functional modules and delivered over a longer period. Additionally more emphasis can be placed in specific areas that are relevant to the attendees.
